How to Assemble an A4 PDF Pattern
In this blog post, I'll share with you how to assemble a PDF pattern.
TO PRINT THE PDF
Open the printable pattern pieces in a PDF Reader such as Adobe or Preview for Mac.
Note that the Layers Feature is currently only supported by Adobe. At this time, you cannot view Layers in Preview for Mac.
To select layers, open the file in Adobe and choose the “Layers” icon
An eye will appear next to each visible layer. Uncheck the sizes you do not need.
The ‘Info’ layer must be turned on for all sizes - this contains pattern markings.
Select Paper Size as A4;
Select Print at 100% (Ensure you do not scale the pattern);
Print the first page and check the 1" test square. If correct, continue to print the full pattern.
TO ASSEMBLE THE PDF
Your pattern is tiled across multiple A4 or US Letter pages which you’ll use to create a full-size pattern. Each tile is labelled with a number (1, 2, 3) and a letter (A, B, C) to indicate its column and row placement. Use the PDF layout guide to see how the tiles should be arranged.
Each tile has a border. Trim along the top and left border lines of each page. This will allow you to overlap the pages neatly.
Lay out your tiles row by row, aligning the registration marks (diamonds and circles) at the edges of each page. These marks will help you align the tiles. Follow these rather than the pattern piece lines. If the registration marks align, so will the pattern.
Secure the pages together with tape or a glue stick. Work across each row then stack the rows together from top to bottom.
To save paper when printing out large sewing patterns, the Pattern Information Booklet will give you the page numbers you need to for the individual pattern pieces.
