How to Assemble an A4 PDF Pattern

If you've ever looked at a PDF pattern and felt immediately overwhelmed, you're not alone! Whilst they aren't intentionally made to be difficult, they can feel that way.

In this blog, I'll share with you how to assemble a PDF sewing pattern, from start to finish.

So let's begin!

Printing the PDF

Open the printable pattern file in a PDF reader such as Adobe Acrobat or Preview for Mac.
Quick note: the Layers feature is only supported in Adobe Acrobat. Layers cannot be viewed in Preview.

If you’re using Adobe:

  • Open the Layers panel (icon on the left-hand toolbar).

  • An eye icon will appear next to each size layer.

  • Turn off the sizes you don’t need.

  • Keep the Info layer switched on,  this contains essential pattern markings and must remain visible.

Before printing:

  • Set paper size to A4

  • Print at 100% scale (do not scale or “fit to page”)

  • Print the first page only and check the 1" / 2.5cm test square

  • If the test square measures correctly, print the remaining pages

Assembling the Pattern

Your pattern is tiled across multiple A4 or US Letter pages. Each page is labelled with a letter (row) and number(column) to show where it fits in the layout. Use the PDF layout guide as your reference.

To assemble:

  • Each page includes a border. Trim along the top and left edges only.

  • This allows the pages to overlap neatly without bulk.

  • Arrange the pages row by row, matching the letter-number grid.

  • Align the registration marks (diamonds and circles) at the page edges.

  • Follow the registration marks, not the pattern lines. If these match, the pattern will too!

Once aligned:

  • Secure the pages using tape or a glue stick.

  • Join each row first, then attach the rows together from top to bottom.

And that's it! With your PDF pattern now assembled, you're ready to start cutting out your fabric.

I hope you found this blog post helpful.

With gratitude,

Cassie
